Ever wondered when you’ll use algebra after school? Many fields actually spend a great deal of time on algebra. In weather forecasting, engineering problems, financial markets, for example, about 80% of the time spent on numerical simulations is devoted to numerical linear algebra. That’s according to CU Denver Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Department Chair and Professor Julien Langou, PhD. His research on algorithms, theory, and computer programs is helping to yield more accurate solutions to problems in these areas—in less time. His work is helping to drive better modeling, delivered faster. “Understanding the theory leads to insights on how to improve algorithms,” Langou said. “Computer program experimentation helps us to detect weaknesses in an algorithm and therefore enables us to find in which direction the algorithm design needs to proceed.”

Mastering emerging technologies and analytical skillsets is a great way to gain a powerful edge in business. But that’s not why Business Analytics Assistant Professor Meysam Rabiee, PhD, is so passionate about what he teaches. Meysam's research focuses mostly on developing decision support systems and applying analytics tools for social good. To be more specific, his primary areas of interest are healthcare analytics, sustainable supply chain, machine learning, evolutionary algorithms, and group decision-making. His work has helped examine better ways of understanding energy efficiency in homes, ambulance relocation guidelines, and navigating uncertainties in supply chains.
Meysam Rabiee

The most important work in digital innovation for business knows no boundaries. Gisella Bassani, PhD, brings the international workplace into the classroom to create a forward-looking learning environment. Her international experience includes development of business intelligence platforms, implementation of a variety of information systems (from SQL Server databases to Visual Basic front-end systems), development of databases and data warehouses, and the development and maintenance of data analysis tools and reports. Bassani has led intercontinental teams. She actively incorporates these experiences in the classroom and helps students relate to colleagues who represent divergent views and experiences, as well as to a variety of information systems.
